Backward cognition proposes that our minds often perceive outcomes before retracing the steps that led there, challenging traditional views of decision-making.

This working paper treats backward cognition as a named operating order: the mind registers a completed pattern or outcome first and reconstructs the pathway afterward. The construct is not a recognized diagnostic category and has no measured population prevalence. It is offered as a synthesis of interlocking findings from insight research, recognition-primed decision making, abductive inference, backward chaining, Gestalt representational change, analogical structure-mapping, holistic cognitive style, predictive processing, dual-process theory, and the Openness-apophenia continuum.
